In each 2 hour workshop, we will listen to and dissect great lyrics. The student can bring his or her own work for assessment and ways to make it better. Follow-ups will occur at each session. Assignments will be given out and by the end of the four week workshop, each student should walk away with several types of lyrics, ready to be set to music. Each student will have a basis of how it is done and how they can work on their own to make their words soar on music. We will examine ballads, comedy, special material, classic pop and movie songs, with an emphasis on musical theatre. Stephen Cole is an award-winning lyricist and librettist with 13 of his musicals produced around the world. Together, we will explore the work of the great lyricists to learn how they did it. We will see how Cole Porter wrote the most sophisticated, sensual and comic songs, how Lorenz Hart changed and upgraded the craft from June/Moon to adult and risqué art, all the while exposing the battered heart that spoke to generations, and how Oscar Hammerstein took the tropes of operetta and refined them into the great American musical play and revolutionized how songs functioned. Storytelling, character, craft…all transformed to the highest lyrical art. As you learn from the greats, Stephen will expose the craft and hard work to make something perfect, or try to. Learning the classical rules enables you to have a foundation from which to blossom and find your own voice. Whether you are a beginner with an affinity for words, or an experienced songwriter, looking for ways to become better at your craft, this class will address your needs and be a helluva lot of fun to boot.
PLEASE NOTE: THAT THIS TRAINING WILL EMPOWER YOU TO WRITE LYRICS IN ANY GENRE AND IS NOT LIMITED TO MUSICAL THEATRE OR POP!
