Cello lessons by Oshagan Merjanian
“I’ve taken cello lessons from Oshagan for about two years. I hadn’t done anything musical for about 30 years before that, so I was really starting from scratch. Oshagan has been a great teacher. He’s friendly and outgoing, which makes lessons comfortable. He’s also infinitely patient, encouraging, and always positive no matter how in or out of tune I might be. We’re using the Suzuki music and CDs, but Oshagan mixes things up a lot so that no two lessons are really the same. We always start with tuning and playing scales, but he even introduces variety in the scales, such as different rhythms and bowing. He also throws in other things to add variety, like a little vibrato practice or thumb position. I can tell that he really believes in challenging me—making sure I am really learning—rather than just doing things by rote. Oshagan has an excellent ear and can always tell when I’m out of tune, even when I don’t know it. He pays attention to the biomechanics of bowing and hand position. He also is very comfortable and confident on the cello, and in his teaching. I especially appreciate his teaching of bowing techniques and their huge importance to tone color; this is something I always thought was all done through vibrato. His feel for the music and how to use the bow to create the subtleties of tone will keep me learning for a long time to come.”

“I hired Oshagan to play for my outdoor wedding located at the Orcutt Ranch in West Hills. From the beginning he made every effort to customize the ceremony and reception music to my interests (and I waited pretty late in the planning process to hire him). He really took an interest in using his musical talents to reflect mine and my husbands personalities. It was refreshing to have his professionalism, insight and help to make the wedding planning process easier, which I desperately needed.”
