Jakob Heinemann teaches bass in Burbank, CA and online. he enjoys working with all levels of students, balancing technical, theoretical and creative aspects of music. He has studied music since the age of 7. At the age of 12, he started performing bass professionally in Madison, WI as guided by Nick Moran. He eventually was granted a performance scholarship to attend Lawrence University in Appleton, WI. He holds a degree in Double Bass Performance from Lawrence, where he studied with Mark Urness and renowned jazz pianist Bill Carrothers. He also pursued work as a composer during this time, working with Patty Darling and receiving the Phi Kappa Lambda Jazz Composition Award during his junior year. After moving to Chicago in 2017, Jakob quickly become an in-demand player within the city’s jazz and improvised music community. In 2024, Jakob moved to Los Angeles to pursue an MFA in Composition at the California Institute of the Arts, where he currently studies with Michael Pisaro and Wolfgang von Schweinitz. Some artists he has had the privilege of working with include Roscoe Mitchell, Tomeka Reid, Marvin Tate and Russ Johnson, and his compositions have been premiered in Chicago, New York City, and Los Angeles. He has played several festivals including the Chicago Jazz Fest, Hyde Park Jazz Festival, 577 Records Festival in Brooklyn, and the Fox Valley Jazz Festival.
