Ellen Burr teaches flute in Los Angeles and online. She has been teaching since she was 16, only 4 years after she started playing taking private lessons. Her teaching style is one of discovery and exploration. She teaches the way and what the student wants to learn. Her students have called her “demanding yet understanding.” Ellen has been told that she teaches life lessons as well as the flute. “Recognize your beauty, radiate your joy.” She teaches classical, rock, blues, jazz, improvisation, Klezmer, Bollywood and any style the student is interested in. Ellen calls her students “my kids.” Many of her students have gone on to win competitions, play in orchestras and teach privately. Besides teaching privately, I was a visiting assistant professor in theory/composition for one year at Wichita State and a visiting flute professor at Cal Arts for one semester. Ellen Burr has a BM degree in Flute Performance, Graduate Cum Laude, Honors Program, 1979 from Wichita State University. She has an MFA degree in Music Composition, 1985 from California Institute of the Arts. École Internationale d’Été, Nice, France, Certificat de Stage with flutist Jean-Pierre Rampal, 1978. Ellen has soloed with orchestras since she was 16, played in rock bands and currently plays in the “West Coast Chamber Jazz Trio” an improvising ensemble, the “LA Flute Orchestra” as well as recording sessions and with Dave Williams funk ensemble “Majic Bullet.” Ellen started playing flute “to get out of social studies twice a week!”
