Aashray Harishankar teaches Keyboard, Composition, Music Theory and Music Technology in the San Fernando Valley and surrounding areas. His teaching style combines theory, piano, composition, and production to give students a more comprehensive understanding of music and how they can find their voice within it. His personal passion is contemporary music but he feeIs that any musician can benefit from guided study, analysis, and practice in all different genres and styles of art. Making these connections is where Aashray feels he has the most impact with his students.
Aashray’s musical foundations lie in Carnatic music (South Indian classical) on the keyboard, which he has performed in the US and in India. He has been playing and performing jazz piano for the past 10 years as well. He earned his B.A. in Music & Technology at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, NJ, where he served as creative director and keyboardist for jazz/contemporary fusion band ‘In the Works’, performing with them and with reggae-rock band ‘Light Warriors’ throughout the tristate area. He is currently pursuing his MFA at CalArts in Valencia, CA . Aashray has written and released a wide range of music over the past couple years, ranging in influence from filmic/orchestral and ambient to rock, pop, jazz, dance, hip-hop/R&B, and world music. Most notably, he released his debut album “Flight” in May 2019, a culmination of years of musical exploration. He intends to continue that exploration of the multicultural and metaphysical connections that embody music, breaking its sonic boundaries and creating new emotional anchors with his music. Besides being completely devoted to music, Aashray also enjoys playing basketball, tennis, traveling, and spending time with friends and family. Aashray owes his passion and musical abilities to his loving grandmother and mentor, Lakshmi Krishnamoorthy.
