Gene Butler teaches harmonica and mountain dulcimer in the San Fernando Valley and surrounding areas. Aside from music, his many talents include writing, directing and acting. For many years, he was known as one of the top acting coaches in the Los Angeles area. One of his gifts as a teacher is to help bring the student up to meet his or her highest potential.
In his words… I was born and raised in the small, colorful city of Macon, Georgia; home to such great musical artists as the Allman Brothers, Otis Redding, Little Richard, Wet Willie, Marshall Tucker and Jason Aldean. Music was all around me and I tried as hard as I could to be around all the music. I think Gospel music in the black churches had the biggest influence on me. I would sit outside one of the black churches, as close to the doors as possible, and listen to their Sunday services. When their choir would sing with all their church-goers joining in, I knew, even at that young age, that this was about as close to heaven as the human soul could get without having to go through the process of dying to get there. Since those days, long ago, I’ve always strived to write what I feel, sing what I hear and never tell a lie in my songs. That goal is what keeps me going forward. My playing and writing tends to lean towards the Americana style of music with lots of country/blues/rock mixed in. My band, Gene Butler & The Daily Bread, do over a hundred original songs and try to add to that number every week. Our home base right now is Los Angeles, but, we travel and play wherever, and whenever there’s a place to travel to and a stage to play on. We’ve played almost every famous, near famous, and completely unknown venue in and around Southern California. I have had the pleasure of playing with and sharing the stage with such amazing talents as Buddy Miller, Gur Morlix, Lucinda Williams, The Desert Rose Band with Chris Hillman, Herb Pedersen and John Jorgenson, Dwight Yoakum, Danny Dugmore, Greg Leisz and the unique fiddling’s of the great fiddle player, Brantley Kearns, plus, many more. I’ve also been fortunate enough to have placed some of my songs in both film and television. Among them are; The Gilmore Girls, Holyman Undercover, Armadillo, The Little Acorn, Wrong Way, New York, Sirens and Malibu Dan; the Family Man.
